Description

Embark on an adventurous drive along the Old Toll Road to Highland Springs, a scenic route primarily on gravel that also features sections of pavement and dirt. This trail connects the area near Hopland (accessible from Highway 175) with the Highland Springs Reservoir vicinity near Kelseyville. Your journey will take you through diverse California landscapes, from open brush country to cool, shady forests. Expect a significant climb to a summit, followed by a descent into a canyon where the road (then called Highland Springs Road) meanders along Highland Creek before eventually returning to pavement near the reservoir. For extra exploration, a side loop on Wildcat Road offers a mix of narrow pavement and gravel. Plan for a full day, as this trip can take around 9 hours to complete. It's a great way to experience some secluded areas and enjoy varied driving conditions.

Directions

To start the Old Toll Road adventure from the Hopland side, head east on Highway 175 for approximately one mile from Hopland. Look for the entrance to Old Toll Road there. The trail generally travels towards the Highland Springs Reservoir, ending near Kelseyville. You might also find access near what's known as the Highland Springs/Old Toll Road split, which can be reached from Highway 29 by taking Highland Springs Road.

Difficulty

This trail presents a good challenge and is considered difficult. You'll navigate a mix of surfaces including plenty of gravel, some uneven or 'funky' pavement, and dirt sections. Be prepared for sharp, hairpin turns and some steep climbs. Parts of the trail are quite rugged, sometimes described as a 'goat road,' meaning they can be narrow and rough. A capable 4x4 vehicle and careful driving are recommended for this route.
