Description

Cumberland Gulch is a scenic off-road trail near Idaho Springs, Colorado, and is part of the larger Yankee Hill network. It's a great choice if you're looking for amazing views of the Continental Divide to the west and Mount Evans to the south. The trail itself isn't too steep and you'll mostly be driving on loose rock or dirt. The lower section winds through a pretty, thickly wooded area. It's generally manageable for stock SUVs that have good ground clearance. Because of its beauty and several spots where you can camp with your vehicle, it's a popular trail, especially in the summer. While Cumberland Gulch is rated as beginner-friendly, keep in mind it connects to other trails in the Yankee Hill system that can be more challenging, so having a map or GPS can be helpful.

Directions

To get to Cumberland Gulch, which is part of the Yankee Hill trail system, you can head west from Denver on I-70. Take Exit 238 for Fall River Road. Drive north on Fall River Road for about 7 miles. You'll be looking for a turnoff to your right where a switchback in the main road swings to the left – that's your route into Cumberland Gulch. Since this area has many interconnected trails, using a GPS with the trail loaded is a smart move to help you find your way around the Yankee Hill network.

Difficulty

This trail is generally considered easy and is a good fit for most stock SUVs with decent ground clearance. You won't find any major obstacles, and the trail isn't very steep. The surface is mainly loose rock and dirt. While the driving on Cumberland Gulch itself is straightforward, it's part of a bigger network of old mining roads called Yankee Hill. Navigating this larger area can sometimes be tricky, so it's a good idea to be prepared for that. The lower parts of Cumberland Gulch offer a pleasant drive through the woods.
