Description
Deer Creek Trail offers a scenic off-road adventure in Colorado, known for beautiful high-altitude views, especially once you reach the top where you might even spot mountain goats. This trail can be a fun trip on its own, or you can combine it with the nearby Saints John trail or the North Fork of the Swan trail to create a longer loop experience. Be prepared for some sections that are narrow, steep, and rocky, so take your time. While generally considered a moderate drive, conditions can get tougher, particularly if it has rained, or due to natural changes that have made the trail a bit more challenging over the years. If you're doing the full loop with the North Fork of the Swan, you'll also get to see an old cabin and cross the Swan River. It's a good idea to check current conditions before heading out, as there have been reports of temporary closures even during the usual open season.
Directions
To reach the Deer Creek Trail: From Route 6 at the east end of the Keystone Ski Area, follow signs for Montezuma Road. Head south on Montezuma Road (which becomes C.R. 5) for approximately 5.2 miles where the pavement ends. Continue south through the town of Montezuma on the wide dirt road (C.R. 5) for another 1.5 miles. You'll find a large parking lot and staging area here, which is a common starting point for the trail.
Difficulty
This trail is rated as moderate, meaning it's a good step up from easy dirt roads. You'll definitely want a 4x4 vehicle with good ground clearance and low-range gearing to comfortably handle the narrow, steep, and rocky parts. While some stock 4x4s might make it, the trail has reportedly become a bit more challenging recently. If there's been rain, expect the steeper climbs to be trickier. Careful driving and choosing your line will be key in several spots. If you're combining this with other trails like the North Fork of the Swan, be ready for potential river crossings.
