Description
The Ironclads trail is a popular and engaging off-road adventure located near Allenspark, Colorado, branching off the well-known Bunce School Road. This relatively short route packs a punch with a variety of challenges, making it an excellent place to test your driving skills and vehicle's capabilities. Expect a rocky and rugged experience with steep climbs, descents, rock gardens, and notable ledges that require careful line selection and tire placement. While some sections might be manageable for stock high-clearance 4x4s, particularly if bypasses are taken, modified vehicles will find the main obstacles more enjoyable. The trail offers internal loop options, but the primary route is an out-and-back due to a gated end. You'll weave through a semi-open forest, passing by a rock climbing area near the start where dispersed camping is often found. It's a well-loved spot, especially on weekends, so be prepared for company. Consider combining it with other trails in the Bunce School Road network, like the nearby T-33A plane crash site, for a full day of off-roading fun.
Directions
The Ironclads trail is accessed via Bunce School Road (Forest Road 105). From Lyons, Colorado: Take Main Street west and turn left onto CO-7. Continue to follow CO-7 West for approximately 14.8 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 105/Bunce School Road. Follow Forest Road 105 for about 1.0 mile and look for a right turn heading uphill; this is the start of the Ironclads 4WD Road (FR216/216.1A). Similar access is available from Allenspark (head southeast on CO-7) or Nederland (via CO-72 Peak to Peak Highway to FR217.1 to FR105).
Difficulty
Ironclads presents a moderate level of difficulty for 4x4 enthusiasts. The trail surface is predominantly rocky, featuring several challenging obstacles such as significant ledges, steep and loose climbs, and rock gardens. Careful tire placement and good line selection are crucial to navigate these sections successfully. One notable obstacle, often referred to as 'The Ledge,' can be particularly tricky and may be slippery, though a bypass is typically available for those in less capable vehicles or seeking an easier route. You'll also encounter a rocky switchback if you choose one of the internal route options. While experienced drivers in well-equipped stock 4x4s might manage, vehicles with good ground clearance, off-road tires, and possibly skid plates will have an easier time. It's a great trail to practice your skills without extreme consequences.
