Description

The North & Middle Fork of the Swan River trail system offers a classic Colorado off-road adventure near Breckenridge, leading you through scenic pine forests and up into the alpine tundra with rewarding views, especially from Wise Mountain. You'll encounter remnants of the area's mining past, including ghost town ruins. The North Fork section features river crossings and can be a bit rugged, while the Middle Fork has its own challenges, including the notable 'Tombstone Hill' rock obstacle and a narrow, steep upper section. The trail provides access to the area between Whale Mountain and Wise Mountain. Be prepared for changing mountain weather and spotty cell service. Unlicensed vehicles are generally permitted on the trail system, including the dirt portion of Tiger Road.

Directions

To access the North Fork section: From Highway 9, about 3 miles north of Breckenridge, head east on the well-marked Tiger Road (County Road 6). Follow signs for the golf course. Continue east after the pavement ends onto a well-graded gravel road. After approximately 4.8 miles on Tiger Road, look for a staging area on your right. Continue for about another mile to find the start of the North Fork route on your left, just before a heavy wooden bridge. The Middle Fork sections can be accessed from this system; for instance, the upper half of the Middle Fork (Route 356) is reportedly a right turn off the main route at a point designated as Waypoint 03 in some guidebooks.

Difficulty

This trail system presents a mix of difficulties. The North Fork is generally moderate, with some steep, loose, and rocky climbs that get rougher after river crossings. The Middle Fork starts easier but includes the challenging 'Tombstone Hill,' a very rocky climb with lines suitable for well-driven stock SUVs up to more built rigs. The upper Middle Fork becomes very narrow, rocky, and steep. An optional side trip to 'Number 10 Hill' is rated as very difficult. Overall, aggressive stock 4x4s with high clearance and low-range gearing can navigate much of the main trail system when conditions are dry. However, some sections will test your vehicle and driving skills, and a few obstacles may not have easy bypasses. Early season snow can make the trail significantly more difficult and potentially dangerous. Using 4-low is recommended for steeper climbs.
