Description
Miller Rock offers a fun and challenging off-road experience west of Lyons, Colorado, within the Roosevelt National Forest. This is primarily an out-and-back trail system with three main branches that dead-end, leading you through thick forests to the prominent Miller Rock formation, which boasts great views. You'll also travel near the South St. Vrain Creek and might spot remains of an old sawmill. The terrain will test your rig, starting with a steep, rocky initial climb. Expect tight trees on some sections (like Forest Road 523), and options for moderate or more difficult routes to Miller Rock itself. You'll need to navigate boulders, tree roots, and washed-out sections. Some areas are narrow with potential drop-offs. While primarily an out-and-back system due to being landlocked by private property, an exit (not entry) through the private Glacier View Ranch via road 252A is possible if you call ahead to arrange for a gate to be unlocked. The area is also popular for hiking and mountain biking, so be courteous and share the trail. Parking at the immediate trailhead is very limited, especially for trailers.
Directions
The Miller Rock trail system is located west of Lyons, Colorado, in the Roosevelt National Forest. A common access point is near GPS coordinates 40.124474, -105.441993 (often associated with the Ceran St. Vrain trailhead, which connects to Miller Rock). From the entry point, you'll typically drive in a short distance (about 0.1 miles) to a small parking spot. Be aware that parking is very limited right at the start of the trail, and there's no space for trailers. The trail system is largely landlocked by private property, so stick to marked routes. The main entry is via public forest roads.
Difficulty
This trail is considered difficult. The adventure begins almost immediately with a steep and rocky climb to get onto the main trail system. You'll encounter sections with tight trees, and the path to Miller Rock itself presents a choice between moderate and more difficult lines. Some segments can become very narrow with intimidating ledges. Expect to navigate large boulders, tree roots, and washed-out areas that require careful maneuvering and a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle. While some upper sections of the trail network might feel more moderate, the initial climb and specific obstacles demand skill and caution. Be prepared for narrow spots where passing oncoming vehicles might be impossible until you reach wider areas.
