Description

Get ready for an adventure on the North & Middle Fork of the Swan River trail system, a fantastic off-road playground nestled near Breckenridge and Frisco! This network of trails climbs through beautiful Colorado forests packed with lodgepole pine, spruce, and fir trees. As you explore, you'll stumble upon cool remnants of the past, like the old mining camps of Swandyke and Rexford, and several historic cabins. The North Fork can take you to the base of Glacier Mountain, or you can connect upwards towards the impressive Wise Mountain. The Middle Fork also offers a scenic ascent to Wise Mountain. Prepare for some exciting driving – you'll encounter creek crossings, steep climbs that will get your heart pumping, and rocky sections that require careful maneuvering. Things can get a bit muddy, especially if it's been raining, adding to the challenge! The views from above the treeline, particularly from Wise Mountain or the connecting St. John's trail (if you venture that way), are absolutely breathtaking, with some parts of the trail reaching over 12,000 feet in elevation. Whether you're looking for an out-and-back trip or a longer loop, this area has plenty to offer for a memorable day of off-roading.

Directions

Access the trail system from Highway 9, located about 3 to 6.7 miles south of Frisco or north of Breckenridge. Turn east onto Tiger Road (County Road 6).

Follow Tiger Road:

  • For North Fork (FDR 354): Continue on Tiger Road for approximately 4.7 to 5.7 miles. You'll pass the old Tiger Townsite, which serves as a winter parking area. About 1 mile past the townsite, look for the North Fork route (FDR 354) turning left. This turn is often just before a heavy wooden bridge if you're approaching from the area where the Middle Fork trail starts.
  • For Middle Fork: Continue on Tiger Road (CR 6) for about 6.2 miles from Highway 9. The road may transition to become Middle Fork Swan Road. After about 0.8 miles on Middle Fork Swan Road, it will turn east and begin the ascent up the Middle Fork of the Swan 4WD road.

A staging area is often noted on Tiger Road, approximately 4.8 miles after the pavement ends.

The trail system provides access to both the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Swan River, with routes that can lead towards Wise Mountain or connect to other trails like the St. John's Trail towards Montezuma.

Difficulty

This trail system is a fun mix, generally ranging from moderate to difficult, so come prepared! You'll find yourself tackling some steep climbs where the trail gets loose and rocky, especially on the North Fork. The upper parts of the Middle Fork can get pretty narrow with more rocks and steep spots. If you're heading out early in the season, be aware that lingering snow can make things trickier and potentially a bit risky. And if it's been raining, expect some sections to turn muddy, which definitely ups the challenge factor. You'll want to pick your lines carefully through the rougher parts. Most capable stock SUVs and 4x4s with good ground clearance and low-range gearing should handle it fine when conditions are dry, but it's always smart to check things out before committing to a tough section. Some obstacles might test your vehicle and your driving skills, and there's always a chance of scraping your undercarriage if you're not careful. Also, remember you'll be driving at high altitudes (over 12,000 feet in some areas), which can affect how your vehicle runs and how you feel, so take it easy and stay aware.
