Description

Radical Hill is a legendary and extremely challenging off-road trail near Montezuma, Colorado, known for testing the limits of both vehicle and driver. This old mining road climbs steeply up a mountainside, featuring narrow, tippy shelf sections, tight switchbacks, and numerous rocky obstacles including large boulders and ledges. The reward for conquering the ascent is an outstanding view from over 12,600 feet, where mountain goats are often spotted. However, the trail is very unforgiving, with a real risk of vehicle damage or rollovers due to the steep inclines and loose surfaces. It's primarily for well-equipped 4x4s, ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes, and requires significant off-road experience. Conditions can vary, and the trail is typically impassable due to snow until mid-summer (July-September are the best months). Always check current conditions with the White River National Forest, Dillon Ranger District before attempting, as access and trail conditions can change.

Directions

Radical Hill is located in the mountains near Montezuma, Colorado, just west of Webster Pass. Access is often gained in conjunction with trails like Webster Pass and Red Cone. The primary trailhead for Radical Hill can be found at approximately GPS coordinates 39.530260, -105.860610. Due to its difficulty and remote nature, ensure you have detailed maps and navigation equipment.

Difficulty

This is a very challenging trail recommended only for experienced off-road drivers with capable 4x4 vehicles. You'll encounter very steep and narrow sections, often on loose rock, where the trail can be 'tippy' or lean your vehicle significantly to one side – sometimes with a steep drop-off nearby! Expect large rocks, some forming ledges or 'walls' up to 3-4 feet high, and tricky rock gardens that require careful tire placement to avoid damage. Some switchbacks are very tight and have loose surfaces. Due to erosion, the trail has become even rockier over time. It's not recommended for stock vehicles or those new to off-roading. There's a significant risk of vehicle damage or even rolling if not navigated with extreme care. The trail has a maximum vehicle width restriction of 72 inches. It's strongly advised not to attempt this trail when wet, as conditions become extremely slick and dangerous.
