Description

Saints John is an exciting off-road adventure near Montezuma, Colorado, that takes you along high alpine ridgelines offering spectacular 360-degree views. This trail, approximately 7 miles long, follows historic ore cart paths from Colorado's mining era, leading you past remnants of the old mining town of Saints John. You'll encounter some interesting hill climbs that add to the challenge. The northern end of the trail connects near the small town of Montezuma. Expect an unpaved and potentially rocky surface that can vary with weather conditions. It's a point-to-point route, so plan your trip accordingly.

Directions

The most common access is from the north, near the town of Montezuma. From Montezuma, you'll find the start of Saints John Road (Forest Development Road 275). The approximate GPS coordinates for this northern access point are 39.579976, -105.867516. The trail then heads south. Be sure to have a good map of the White River National Forest area as the trail can be used in both directions.

Difficulty

Get ready for a fun drive on the Saints John trail! It has some good hill climbs that will give your 4x4 a workout. You'll be driving on old mining roads high up in the mountains. Some spots can be tricky, and you'll definitely need a vehicle with good ground clearance and four-wheel drive. One driver reported it as 'barely passable with a 4x4' under certain conditions. The trail surface is mostly dirt and rock, and it can get muddy or snowy depending on the time of year, so check conditions before you go. It's a good idea to be comfortable with uneven terrain.
