Description

Embark on an adventurous drive to a piece of history on the T-33 Plane Crash Trail! This off-road journey takes you through the beautiful Arapaho National Forest, following a portion of the historic Bunce School Road system, to the site where a T-33A Shooting Star jet trainer crashed in 1965. The trail itself, primarily Forest Road 203, offers a good mix of challenges. You'll start on a relatively moderate path that progressively gets tougher, testing your driving skills and vehicle's capability with notable rock obstacles, including a tricky 'V' notch and several rock steps. High clearance is a must, and you'll want to pick your lines carefully. The trail culminates at a small parking area where an interpretive sign tells the story of the crash. From there, it's a short hike to view the scattered remains of the aircraft, a poignant reminder of the past amidst the serene forest setting. This trail is a popular choice for those looking for a moderately difficult adventure with a unique historical destination.

Directions

To reach the T-33 Plane Crash Trail, you'll typically start from the Bunce School Road area. The most direct access to the specific T-33 trail (Forest Road 203) is as follows: From the town of Allenspark, CO:

  1. Head east on CO-7 E (Peak to Peak Highway) for approximately 4.3 miles.
  2. Turn right onto CO-72 E and continue for about 4.1 miles.
  3. Turn right onto Middle Saint Vrain Road (County Road 92 / Forest Road 1141). Drive for about 0.4 miles, passing through the Peaceful Valley Campground area.
  4. Turn right onto Bunce School Road (Forest Road 105) and drive for approximately 0.9 miles.
  5. Turn left onto Forest Road 202 and proceed for a short 0.2 miles.
  6. Finally, turn right onto Forest Road 203 – this is the T-33 Plane Crash Trail.

Alternative starting points like Lyons or Nederland will also lead you to CO-72 to access Middle Saint Vrain Road.

Difficulty

The T-33 Plane Crash Trail (Forest Road 203) is known for its challenging rock obstacles. After an initial easier section, the trail becomes progressively more technical. Key challenges include multiple rock steps, a significant rock outcropping with a 'V' notch that requires careful maneuvering, and narrow sections between trees and roots. The first major obstacle area offers three different lines with varying difficulty. High ground clearance is essential, and vehicles with modifications such as lifts, larger off-road tires, and locking differentials will have an advantage. Drivers should be prepared to pick careful lines to avoid undercarriage or body damage. Some sources note that the trail has become more difficult over time. The descent can be just as challenging as the climb.
