Description

This approximately 6.16 km (3.8 miles) trail, often referred to as part of the Yankee Hill or Mosquito Creek network, serves as a scenic and moderately challenging connector route leading towards the more difficult Kingston Peak trail system. It winds through forests, often following an active creek bed where water can be up to 12 inches deep. You'll encounter a mix of terrain, from some flatter, even sections to areas with rocks and other obstacles. While enjoyable for its own merits, including views near Pile Hill and beautiful aspens in the fall, it's a key link for those looking to access the expansive Yankee Hill trail system or tackle the high-altitude adventure of Kingston Peak. Be aware that while this connector might be passable for longer periods, the higher elevations of Kingston Peak have a shorter season due to snow. Wide vehicles should exercise caution in some narrower spots.

Directions

Access to the Yankee Hill and Mosquito Creek trail system, which includes this connector, can be found in the general vicinity of GPS coordinates 39.846992, -105.617098 (as indicated by OnXMaps for the Yankee Hill / Mosquito Creek trail area). Specific entry points can vary. For instance, Mosquito Creek Road is identified as 705.1. To access the connected Kingston Peak trail, some users start from a northern parking area (referred to as Waypoint 03 by Funtreks for Kingston Peak). The Yankee Hill area can also be accessed from FS 709.1.

Difficulty

This connector trail itself is generally considered moderate. Expect a combination of dirt and rocky sections, with some obstacles and potential water crossings in the creek bed up to a foot deep. While some parts are relatively easy, others will require careful navigation around rocks. It's suitable for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. This trail provides access to the significantly more challenging Kingston Peak trail, which features very steep and rocky sections, shelf roads, and requires aggressive, high-clearance SUVs with low-range gears.
