Description

Hell's Revenge is an iconic and extremely challenging 4x4 trail located in the Sand Flats Recreation Area near Moab, Utah, famous for its steep climbs and descents on vast expanses of 'slickrock' sandstone. Spanning approximately 6.5 miles, it typically takes 2-3 hours to complete. The trail is recommended only for very experienced drivers with highly capable, modified 4x4 vehicles due to its hazardous terrain, sharp turns, and narrow ledges with significant drop-offs. It features several famous and very difficult optional obstacles like Hell's Gate, the Escalator, and various 'hot tubs,' many of which have bypasses for those not wishing to attempt them. While demanding, the trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the La Sal Mountains, Arches National Park, and the Colorado River canyon. The route is marked with signs and paint on the rock surface. Be aware that the Slickrock Bike Trail (for motorcycles and mountain bikes) crosses Hell's Revenge in places, so exercise caution and share the trail.

Directions

From U.S. Highway 191 in Moab, turn east onto 300 South. Continue on 300 South until you reach 400 East, then turn right. Follow 400 East to Mill Creek Drive. Turn east (left) onto Mill Creek Drive, which becomes Sand Flats Road. Continue east on Sand Flats Road for approximately 1 mile. The trailhead for Hell's Revenge is located just past the Sand Flats Recreation Area Entrance Station. Trailhead GPS coordinates are approximately 38.575317, -109.522583.

Difficulty

Hell's Revenge is rated as extremely difficult and is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced off-roaders. It demands a high level of driving skill and a well-equipped, high-clearance 4x4 vehicle, preferably with modifications like lockers and enhanced suspension. The trail consists primarily of steep ascents and descents on slickrock sandstone, often with sharp turns and exposure to steep drop-offs. Key challenges include navigating large rock ledges, 'hot tubs' (deep depressions in the rock), and very steep inclines. Famous named obstacles like Hell's Gate (a steep, off-camber descent and ascent in a narrow chute) and the Escalator (a series of stepped climbs) are considered severe and are optional, with bypasses available. Even the main trail requires careful tire placement and a good understanding of your vehicle's capabilities. Stock vehicles might struggle significantly, and undercarriage damage is possible. A less difficult variation called 'Tip-Toe through Hell' bypasses the hardest sections.
