Description
Get ready for a serious challenge on Rose Garden Hill, a notorious off-road section near Moab, Utah, famous for testing even well-equipped 4x4s and their drivers. This trail is a highlight for many during the Easter Jeep Safari, often drawing crowds to watch vehicles battle the treacherous ascent. Primarily known for its incredibly steep and difficult hill climb, Rose Garden Hill is a key connector on the Kokopelli Trail, linking areas like Onion Creek with the Top of the World trail. You'll encounter a demanding mix of steep inclines and descents, very loose rocks, large boulders, and imposing ledges that require precise maneuvering. While it's a relatively short segment, conquering the hill itself can take hours, especially if conditions are tough or if there's traffic. Be aware that this trail is shared with mountain bikers on the Kokopelli Trail, so exercise caution and share the trail respectfully. Due to its difficulty, this trail is best suited for experienced off-roaders with modified vehicles.
Directions
Access to Rose Garden Hill is typically via Onion Creek Road. From Highway 191 north of Moab, take Highway 128 east along the Colorado River for approximately 20.2 miles. Turn right onto the well-marked Onion Creek Road (often referred to as Trail #47). Follow Onion Creek Road generally east for about 9.5 miles. You will then turn left onto a lesser, more challenging road which marks the approach to or start of the Rose Garden Hill section. This trail segment is part of the larger Kokopelli Trail and serves as a connecting route between the Top of the World trail area and Onion Creek.
Difficulty
Rose Garden Hill is a very difficult and technical off-road trail, rated a 7 out of 10. The main challenge is a formidable hill, roughly a quarter to a half-mile long, featuring a relentless combination of steep grades, extremely loose rocky surfaces, large, sharp-edged boulders, and tall, exposed ledges. Water drainage has also carved significant ruts into the trail, adding to the complexity. Expect your vehicle to be bounced and tossed significantly. Success on Rose Garden Hill demands careful and constant line selection to navigate the obstacles and avoid vehicle damage; axles and driveshafts are common casualties. This trail is absolutely not for stock vehicles or inexperienced drivers. You'll need a 4x4 with very high ground clearance, robust undercarriage protection (skid plates and rock sliders are essential), and large, durable off-road tires (35 inches or larger are recommended). Front and rear locking differentials and a reliable winch are highly advisable, as getting stuck is a common occurrence. Breakage is a real possibility, so go prepared. While some find it slightly easier to run in the downhill direction, it remains a treacherous undertaking. The trail is best attempted in dry weather conditions and with a small group of other capable, winch-equipped vehicles for support.
