Description

Steel Bender is a renowned and challenging off-road trail near Moab, Utah, offering a classic Moab experience. This loop trail, typically around 9.5 to 15 miles for the core off-highway section, takes you through stunning canyon country. You'll encounter multiple crossings of Mill Creek, sandy washes, grippy slickrock sections, and a series of rock ledges and obstacles that will test your vehicle and driving skills. Highlights include towering canyon walls, ancient petroglyphs, and epic views, especially as you climb towards the La Sal Mountains. Be prepared for some tough spots, like 'The Wall' and other significant ledges, some of which may be impassable for certain vehicles or require careful maneuvering. The trail is known for the 'Moab Bump' technique needed on some obstacles. While some bypasses may exist for harder sections, this trail is generally not recommended for stock SUVs. Recent weather, like floods, can alter trail conditions, so be aware of potential changes. Remember to stay on the marked trail, as a Wilderness Study Area is nearby and must be avoided.

Directions

The most common access is from Moab. Take Highway 191 south from town for about 3 miles and turn left onto Spanish Trail Road (at the gas station). Continue straight through the roundabout, which becomes Westwater Drive. Climb the winding Westwater Drive for another mile. Turn right onto the marked Steel Bender trail just before you reach the gate to a private subdivision. The trailhead coordinates for this southern access are approximately 38.476571, -109.422452.

Difficulty

Steel Bender is considered a difficult trail, demanding for both vehicle and driver. You'll encounter a variety of challenges: numerous rock ledges of varying sizes, some of which are large, sharp, and can cause bumper damage. Certain ledges have become too tall for most vehicles and may not have a bypass. The infamous 'The Wall' obstacle is a significant challenge that has required winching for some. Creek crossings of Mill Creek can be deep, especially in spring, potentially reaching over the hood on some vehicles. The trail also features steep, rocky climbs and descents, sandy sections, and slickrock that requires careful tire placement. The 'Moab Bump' driving technique is often necessary to overcome certain ledges. While some sources mention bypasses for the toughest obstacles, allowing well-equipped stock 4x4s with excellent clearance to pass, the overall trail is not recommended for inexperienced drivers or unmodified SUVs. Recent floods have reportedly altered parts of the trail, potentially washing out sections or creating new ruts and challenges on ledges.
