Description

Shoestring Trail, officially designated as 4W308, is an engaging 3.7-mile point-to-point 4x4 route nestled within the Manastash ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) trail system in the scenic Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. This trail offers a moderate challenge and connects the Manastash Ridge and Tripod Flat trails, making for a great segment of a larger off-road adventure. As you navigate Shoestring Trail, you'll journey through forests that are actively recovering from past fires, showcasing new growth amidst the older landscape. The terrain is varied: expect to encounter sections with mud holes (some potentially up to 18 inches deep), areas with loose rocks (also up to 18 inches), and a notable rock garden that will test your line choices. A significant feature is a long, steep climb up to Manastash Ridge. Keep an eye out for fallen trees that may lie along or near the trail, and be prepared for some narrow sections that require careful maneuvering to avoid scratching your vehicle on trees. Many adventurers access this 4x4 trail via the multi-use Shoestring Lake Trail (#1385), which starts from Forest Road 3100 and leads to the beginning of the 4W308 jeep trail. Shoestring Trail is a rewarding experience for those seeking a bit of technical driving in a beautiful Pacific Northwest forest setting.

Directions

To reach the Shoestring Trail (4W308) area, you'll typically first navigate to the Shoestring Lake Trail (#1385), which serves as an access route. From Interstate 90, take Exit 101 (west of Ellensburg). Head south and then southeast on Thorp Highway for approximately two miles. Make a right turn onto Miller Road. Follow Miller Road until it intersects with Robinson Canyon Road, where Miller Road changes its name to Cove Road. Continue on Cove Road until you reach Manastash Road. Turn right onto Manastash Road and follow it to the end of the pavement. From this point, continue onto the unpaved Forest Road 3100 for about 3 miles, driving past Buck Meadows. This will bring you to the trailhead for Shoestring Lake Trail #1385 (approximate GPS: 47.049440, -120.976520). Take Trail #1385, which will eventually connect you to the Shoestring Jeep Trail (4W308). The Shoestring Trail (4W308) itself is a point-to-point 4x4 route. A general GPS coordinate for a point on the 4W308 trail is approximately 47.020187, -121.004504.

Difficulty

This trail is considered moderately challenging for 4x4 vehicles. You should be prepared for several types of obstacles. Expect mud holes that can be up to 18 inches deep, requiring careful navigation or a good head of steam. There are also long, steep climbs covered with loose rocks, some of which can be as large as 18 inches. A significant rock garden will demand careful tire placement and potentially a spotter. Fallen trees are common along the trail, and some sections are quite narrow, winding tightly through trees, which means there's a risk of pinstriping if you're not careful. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended. Some users have reported that the trail can feel more difficult than its 'moderate' rating might suggest, so it's wise to be prepared for a solid challenge.
