Description

String Lake Loop is a scenic 3.8-mile trail located in Grand Teton National Park. It's important for off-road enthusiasts to know that this is a designated hiking and equestrian trail and is NOT open to any motorized vehicles, including 4x4s. The trail offers outstanding views of the Cathedral Group (Teewinot Mountain, Grand Teton, Mt. Owen) and Mt. Moran, especially in the early morning light. It circles String Lake, passing the Leigh Lake Trailhead and junctions for Bearpaw Lake Trail and Paintbrush Canyon Trail. While a beautiful area, this is not an off-road driving route.

Directions

To reach the String Lake Trailhead: From Moose Junction, drive approximately 10.6 miles north on Teton Park Road (or 10 miles south from Jackson Lake Junction) to the North Jenny Lake Junction. Turn west at North Jenny Lake Junction. Continue for another 1.4 miles to the turn-off for the String Lake Trailhead. After turning right, the trailhead parking area will be on your immediate left. The trailhead coordinates are approximately 43.78467 N, 110.72727 W.

Difficulty

This trail is rated as easy for hiking. It features a moderate climb through a lodgepole pine forest and passes through an area prone to avalanches. The trail surface includes some paved sections as well as natural dirt paths. It is NOT suitable for any type of off-road vehicle.
