Description

Imogene Pass is a legendary high-altitude 4x4 trail connecting the historic mining towns of Ouray and Telluride, Colorado. Reaching a breathtaking summit at over 13,100 feet, it's one of the highest drivable passes in the state, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains. The route traverses a landscape rich in mining history, passing by the remnants of the Tomboy Mine and other historic sites. Expect a challenging drive with steep climbs, narrow shelf roads, rocky sections, and numerous switchbacks. This trail is a bucket-list adventure for experienced off-roaders, rewarding them with incredible scenery and a true backcountry experience. Due to heavy snowfall, the pass is typically only open from early July to early/mid-October. Unlicensed vehicles may have access restrictions on the Telluride side and might need to start from Camp Bird Road on the Ouray side; check local regulations.

Directions

Imogene Pass connects Ouray and Telluride and can be driven in either direction, though some recommend starting from Telluride to drive downhill on the steeper, rockier sections near Ouray.

Ouray Side Access: From the town of Ouray, head south on US Highway 550 for about 0.6 miles. Look for a right turn onto Camp Bird Road (Ouray County Road 361). Follow the graded dirt Camp Bird Road for approximately 4.7 to 5 miles. The turnoff for Imogene Pass (often marked as Forest Road 869 or 26B) will be on your right; some descriptions mention crossing a creek at the start of the Imogene Pass road itself.

Telluride Side Access: From Colorado Avenue (Main Street) in Telluride, head north on North Aspen Street for about two blocks. Turn right onto West Galena Avenue and proceed for one block. Turn left onto North Oak Street. North Oak Street will make a right turn and become Tomboy Road (sometimes signed as K68 or Forest Road 869). Follow Tomboy Road uphill; this is the beginning of the Imogene Pass trail from the Telluride side.

Difficulty

Imogene Pass is a challenging trail recommended for experienced 4x4 drivers with high-clearance vehicles equipped with low-range gearing. The trail features steep and narrow shelf roads with significant drop-offs, sharp switchbacks, and rocky sections with obstacles that may require careful tire placement. Some areas can have loose surfaces, and depending on the time of year, you might encounter snow or ice, especially near the summit, which can make conditions much tougher. Recent reports indicate areas of erosion, washouts, and sections requiring rock crawling with off-camber situations. This trail is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced drivers; a fear of heights can make this drive particularly unnerving. Skid plates and good off-road tires are highly recommended.
