Description
Get ready for an exciting trip on the Middle St. Vrain - Coney Flats trail! This popular Colorado off-road route offers a great mix of scenic beauty and moderate challenges. You'll drive alongside the Middle St. Vrain Creek, eventually reaching the Coney Flats area. The trail is famous for its water crossing at Coney Flats, which can be quite deep, especially in the spring – so be sure to check conditions before you go. Expect some rocky sections, a fun rock garden, and potentially muddy spots if it's been wet. Most of the trail is manageable, but certain parts will definitely test your high-clearance 4x4 and driving skills. It's a good idea to have a vehicle that's at least an aggressive stock 4x4, or lightly modified. If you're looking to camp, Camp Dick Campground is right at the start, and there are some nice trailside spots too. Remember, this trail has seasonal closures, usually from early December to mid-June, so plan your trip accordingly. The trail is roughly 6 miles long and offers some beautiful Colorado mountain scenery, including a chance to spot a hidden waterfall.

From Lyons: Head west on Highway 7, then turn south onto Highway 72 towards Peaceful Valley. Follow directions as above from Peaceful Valley.
Difficulty
This trail presents a mix of conditions, with most of the route being easy to moderate for a capable 4x4. However, a significant portion, including a notable rock garden and other rocky stretches, requires very high ground clearance and careful driving. Expect several water crossings; the one at Coney Flats is the most significant and can be very deep, especially in spring or after heavy rain – assess conditions carefully. Deep mud can also be a factor when conditions are wet. This trail is a good step up if you're looking to test your skills and vehicle on something more challenging than a basic forest road. Aggressive stock 4x4s or lightly modified vehicles are recommended.
