Description

Ophir Pass is a breathtaking high-mountain route, climbing to nearly 11,800 feet, that connects the areas around Silverton (via US 550) and Telluride (via CO 145 and the town of Ophir). This historic path, once used by Native Americans and later as a mining toll road, winds through the stunning Uncompahgre and San Juan National Forests, offering spectacular alpine views, especially of the Ophir Valley. While much of the trail is a straightforward drive for a 4x4, the western side features a famously narrow and rocky shelf road that descends towards Ophir. This section requires careful maneuvering due to a sheer drop-off and limited space for passing – remember, uphill traffic should yield. The pass is a popular multi-use route; while primarily enjoyed by 4x4 vehicles, be aware of hikers. Unlicensed OHVs (like ATVs and dirt bikes) are generally permitted on Ophir Pass Road itself, but note that they are typically restricted from riding through the town of Ophir and on the section of Forest Road 630 west of Ophir to State Highway 145.

Directions

Ophir Pass can be accessed from two main directions:

Eastern Access (from US Highway 550 / Silverton side): From Silverton, travel approximately 4.2 to 4.8 miles north on US Highway 550 (Million Dollar Highway). Look for a turn-off to the west for County Road 8 (CR 8), also signed as Ophir Pass Road or Forest Road 679. This is near mile marker 75 on US 550, about 5 miles south of Red Mountain Pass. The trailhead coordinates for this access are approximately 37.84652° N, -107.72483° W.

Western Access (from Ophir / Telluride / CO Highway 145 side): From Telluride, head south on CO Highway 145. About 13 miles south of Telluride (or from 'Society Junction' 4 miles west of Telluride on HWY 145, turn south past the ski area turnoff), you will reach the small, historic town of Ophir. Drive east through Ophir on Forest Road 630 (Ophir Pass Road) to begin the ascent towards the pass. Unlicensed OHVs are generally not permitted through the town of Ophir or on FR630 west of Ophir to CO-145.

Difficulty

Ophir Pass is generally a moderately challenging trail for 4x4 vehicles. Most of the route consists of graded or unpaved mountain roads. The primary challenge is a narrow, rocky shelf road section on the western side, descending towards the town of Ophir. This section can be intimidating due to a steep drop-off and limited room for passing; uphill traffic should yield to downhill traffic. While high clearance is beneficial, the trail doesn't typically present extreme technical obstacles beyond this shelf road and some rocky patches. Careful driving and awareness are key, especially on the narrow sections.
